Many benefits with AI when recruiting

When ever increasing amounts of data need to be reviewed, more effective analysis methods are required. Today, many companies are looking at how artificial intelligence can speed up the recruitment process. At MultiMind’s popular breakfast seminar, the question was asked: Is AI the way to a more inclusive recruitment process? The answer is yes, but only if you are norm critical.

Rebecka Birgersson is from Centigo, a company that works with various AI projects to streamline and eliminate steps in the recruitment process.
“To find today’s top talent, intelligent digital solutions are needed that help sort information and sync data,” says Rebecka.

Centigo’s experience is that it is possible to work both efficiently and be inclusive with the help of AI. By faster sorting, selection and interaction, you can save time even when the amount of data increases. With proper algorithms, the information can be sorted from parameters such as sex, age and ethnicity to prevent any distortion of the process.

The first impression is crucial
The hotel and restaurant industry is booming and has an intensive need to quickly recruit staff. Diversity among the staff is desirable as you have many international guests. Henrik Dider is HR Director of Scandic Hotels Sweden, which annually needs to employ 2,000 people for the coming years.

For Scandic, the employees’ personality and sense of service are more important than education or professional experience. Therefore, they have chosen to place both the CV and the personal letter last in the recruitment process. Instead, the applicants record a short video where they respond to how they feel about service, as well as describing themselves.

“They get about 20 seconds, which is the same amount of time that the hotel or restaurant has to make a good first impression with the guest,” says Henrik.

The combination of what you say and how you say it is important. The personality has a direct impact on video, and after that you can proceed with analysis and interviews. Using a candidate-driven process in this way fits in well with the age generation that is sought after in the hotel and restaurant industry.

The best candidates are coveted and have no time to wait for a message. So, the method is not only time efficient, it also saves money and creates a better result. In addition, it has proven to lead to the highest level of customer satisfaction, which is what the industry strives for.

Ethics requires norm critical thinking
Robots are good at sorting and selecting large amounts of information and other assignments that people find tedious, but it is important not to be enticed by the features of AI. One must also think critically about the analytical methods, not least from a diversity perspective.

As a democratic agent and entrepreneur, Barakat Ghebrehwariat from Democrateam has extensive experience working with diversity based on a communication and norm critical perspective. He sees a certain risk of digital discrimination if the correct human skills are lacking in the programming of the robots.

"Because data is often lacking, diversity is still a lot about guessing," says Barakat.

With today’s technology, AI is primarily used to sort the information while people analyze it. The golden rule “junk data in - junk data out” still applies. It’s all about the human factor and being constantly aware of one’s own unconsciousness and personal references when dealing with data.

He sees the development of AI and how to handle trolls as other important issues. If robots end up in the wrong hands, they can easily be trained to become racist, anti-semitic or discriminatory in other ways. So far, only people have the ability to think ethically and emphatically.

3 tips for successful recruitment projects with AI

1. Think big, but start small!
Make a clear demarcation for the task, such as screening CV.

2. Create awareness in the organization
Transparency around the process is the key to counteracting resistance.

3. Be norm critical in programming
In data must be kept neutral from parameters such as gender, age and ethnicity.
